Johnny Simmons is heading up the cast of Kevin Pollak’s The Late Bloomer, which has begun filming in Los Angeles.
Pollak is making his directorial debut on the feature, written by by Joe Nussbaum, Paul A. Kaplan and Mark Torgove, and by Kyle Cooper and Austyn Jeffs from the book Man Made: A Memoir of My Body, by journalist Ken Baker.
The book recounts Baker’s real-life experience dealing with a tumor that affected his hormonal system, preventing him from entirely going through puberty until age 27. In the feature inspired by the book, Simmons will play a sex therapist who undergoes puberty in the course of just a few weeks once a tumor is discovered and treated. His parents are played by Maria Bello and J.K. Simmons. He works in an office headed by Jane Lynch. His various friends are played by Beck Bennett, Kumail Nanjiani and Blake Cooper. And the woman he ends up pursuing is played by Brittany Snow. The cast also includes Paul Wesley, Ken Marino, Ileana Douglas, Charlotte McKinney, Vanessa Ragland and Leonora Crichlow.
Heidi Jo Markel of Eclectic Pictures and Raphael Kryszek and Jesse Israel of Ineffable Pictures are producing, with Conor Charles as co-producer.
